If we’d really been gone, we’d now have a giant pile of laundry to wash. A stack of mail and newspapers to sort through. An email inbox filled to overflowing. A yard to mow and a garden to weed. Not to mention a full schedule of regular life and appointments to keep.
Wait a minute. I’ve got all those things and I haven’t even been gone!
Hmm. What else would I bring home from vacation? A tan. Souveniers. A few extra pounds around the waistline. Memories and photos. Awareness of a world much larger than my little corner. Appreciation for those who’ve lived in the past and the legacy they’ve left behind. A greater understanding of humanity in general. Awe at the scenic variety of our planet. Renewed energy and peace of mind. A fresh perspective on my circumstances. A willingness to take risks.
However, if I’m not careful, the busy-ness of returning home can undo the benefits of being away.
What about you? What intangibles do you bring home from vacation? How long do they last?
