I wonder what the Levites thought when God divided the promised land between the tribes of Israel … and their names weren’t called. Instead, they were set apart to the Lord … and got God as their inheritance. (See Deuteronomy 10:9)

They weren’t given tangible land. Rather, they received the incomparable treasure of God’s personal presence … and the opportunity to prepare a place of worship and serve their brothers in 48 cities scattered throughout the region.

What had they done to deserve such a blessing? They chose God.

You see, back in the wilderness while Moses was up the mountain talking to God and getting the Ten Commandments, the Children of Israel got bored and made a golden calf to worship instead. Moses came down, got mad, threw some things, and yelled for anyone who was for the Lord to come to him. Who came? All the Levites. And God responded by blessing and setting them apart.

Years later, King David (a man from a different tribe) wrote, “The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup … I have a beautiful inheritance.” (Psalm 16:5-6 ESV) Another time, he wrote, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.” (Psalm 142:5 NIV) “One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life.” (Psalm 27:4a NIV) David wanted to be like a Levite. He chose God … and found Him.

We can also choose God. And when we find Him, we get a beautiful inheritance in this life. Love. Joy. Peace. Healing. Wisdom. Protection. All of this comes from the hand of the One who created the heavens and the earth. Because, most of all, we get Him.

“Whom have I in heaven but you? And Earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” (Psalm 73:25-26 NIV)

For me, that truth helps me through the hard days on this broken planet.

What about you? Do you look for God’s blessings here … or are you waiting for rewards later? Have you chosen Him? How has He blessed you?
