“Let the beloved of the LORD rest secure in him, for he shields him all day long, and the one the LORD loves rests between his shoulders.” (Deuteronomy 33:12 NIV) Moses spoke this blessing over the tribe of Benjamin, but when I imagine God’s love for his people, I come back to this verse.

Can you picture it? Resting between God’s shoulders. Where would that be? Leaning against his chest, snuggled in and hearing God’s heartbeat? Shielded. Surrounded. Protected. Secure.

In our women’s Bible Study at church, I’ve been reminded of the beautiful inheritance God has laid out for us. Like when the Children of Israel entered their promised land, God also gives us areas of stewardship and responsibility. He also gives us … Himself. And there’s something more that makes my heart swell with adoration.

“When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when he divided all mankind, he set up boundaries for the peoples according to the number of the sons of Israel. For the LORD’s portion is his people, Jacob his allotted inheritance.” (Deuteronomy 32:8 NIV)

When God divided up everything between the peoples, what did He claim for Himself? The people.

Why did He create the Earth? For a relationship with people. Why did He send His own Son? To restore broken people back to that relationship.

And when I picture myself resting between his shoulders, it’s not just about me feeling that love. I think God might enjoy that embrace even more than I do.

What about you? When do you feel the embrace of heaven? Do you have kids to snuggle with? Who enjoys those hugs more? Does that change your view of God?

The Embrace of Heaven
