In honor of Thanksgiving, I’m taking today’s post to turn my thoughts toward gratitude and being thankful.

If you’re anything like me, we tend to think in terms of “I’m thankful for …” and the list usually includes family, friends, a job, and health.

But what if life isn’t going so well? What if your health (like mine) isn’t great? What if there are relationship problems with your spouse, teenager, or grown child? What if you’re under pressure at work … or just got laid off?

That’s when coming up with something to be thankful for gets hard. But Paul wrote to “give thanks in all circumstances.” (1 Thes. 5:18 NIV) Did you catch that key word? In, not for.

So, in the midst of another flare-up of chronic fatigue mixed with anemia, I can give thanks for the forced reprioritizing. Thanks for the time to rest and spend time with family. Thanks for the reminder to not judge others at face value but look below the surface. (i.e. “You don’t look sick …”)

Thanks that God is with me in my circumstances.

What about you? What are you thankful for this week? What are you thankful in?

In Everything Give Thanks
