As the new year stretches before me, the words that keep running through my mind come straight from Scripture. In 2012, I want to be like a tree planted by the waters.

“He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.” ~Psalm 1:3 NKJV

“For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes; but her leaf will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit.” ~Jeremiah 17:8 NKJV

What images come to mind when you think about a tree? Towering strength. Fragrant blossoms. Cool shade. Branches to hold swings and birdnests. Juicy fruit. Beautiful fall colors. Snow-covered and sparklingĀ fingers outlined against the blue sky. Roots that dig deep and branches that stretch out.

That’s what I want to be in 2012. I don’t know if the year ahead holds heat or drought, but I know that I want to be firmly planted and nourished by the waters. I want to stay green and grow fruit so I can bless others.

What about you? What is your theme for 2012?

Thank you for reminding me of God’s promise to keep me fruitful. He is faithful in using me even when I’m old and tired. Though I hope to retire from my job this year, my focus for 2012 is to be a yeilded vessel, so that He may be glorified in the fruit that I bear.
