How many species of trees are there in the world? Thousands! (Up to 100, 000 if you believe some online sources).

With thousands of species of trees, the variety is amazing. Extremely tall redwoods. Gnarled olive trees. Evergreens and color-changing deciduous. Fast-growing shade trees. Fruit trees like apple, orange, pear, peach, and cherry (and all the varieties of each) not to mention coconuts, bananas, and pomogranates. Nut trees like almonds, walnuts, and pecans. Lumber sources like oak, ash, and pine. Flowering and fragrant trees like dogwood, magnolia, and crape myrtle. Sap-oozing trees that give us gum, rubber, and maple syrup. Not to mention coffee … chocolate … and medicines.

Bottom line? With the variety of species comes a wide variety of purposes from functional to decorative. Shade in the summer and wood to burn in the winter. Lumber to build shelter. Food to eat. Homes for birds and squirrels.

I want to be like a tree planted by the waters that bears fruit in season and doesn’t wilt. But what kind of tree am I? What benefit do I offer to others? Do I provide a wind break and shelter those around me? Do I bring beauty and a sweet fragrance to others? What kind of fruit do I bear?

Just like the wide variety of trees in our world, there is even more variety in the people. And we each serve a unique purpose.

What about you? What is your favorite kind of tree? What type of tree are you like? What type do you want to be like?
