What potential lies hidden within you?

Take a close look at this picture. What do you see? A brown colored nut. Relatively small. Seemingly insignificant, especially compared to the size of the surrounding leaves.

What don’t you see? The potential of this acorn to grow into a mighty oak towering 70 to 100 feet tall. And as an oak, also have the ability to shade large expanses, produce hundreds of acorns, multiply them into a forest, and eventually yield strong lumber for a legacy of building projects.

Max Lucado wrote a children’s picture book titled The Oak Inside the Acorn which tells the story of acorn whose mother let him go with the encouragement to grow and become all he could be. After being planted, the tiny acorn grew into a little oak tree. However, he compared himself to the surrounding orange trees and rose bushes, wishing he could be different. It wasn’t until years later, when the oak tree was large enough and strong enough, that he finally discovered his purpose. A powerful message.

Lessons for us? Discover what kind of “nut” I am. Embrace the amazing potential within. Appreciate my own uniqueness. Stop comparing myself with others. Patiently grow and grow. Live the way I was designed to live.

In short, be the tree God made me to be.

What about you? Do you have untapped potential? Do you compare yourself with others? Are you an oak … or an acorn-in-progress?
