At the foot of my bed is a cedar chest. A basement closet in our old house was paneled with cedar. What’s so special about cedar wood?

Cedar trees are large evergreen trees that often live for a long time. Why? Because natural oils in the wood are toxic to insects and fungus (and smell good!). In Bible times, the cedars of Lebanon were sought after for building palaces and even the Temple in Jerusalem. The logs were also used for shipbuilding, making the native people of Lebanon the first trading nation in the world. Cedars came to symbolize strength and magnificence.

The psalmist wrote, “The righteous will … grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of our God. They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green.” (Psalm 92:12-14 NIV)

Always green. Fragrant wood. Flourishing and bearing fruit.

If I’m going to be like a tree in 2012, I want to be like a cedar. I want God’s Word to strengthen and protect me from the inside out so I can grow tall, bear fruit, and give off a pleasant aroma to the world.

What about you? Do you like the smell of cedar? What scent permeates your life?
