What’s your favorite thing to do? What’s your least favorite? The Christmas season seems to bring out both the best and worst for me.

Before I can even put out all those colorful decorations that make the house so festive … I feel obligated to remove the layer of dust that’s somehow accumulated in those hard-to-reach areas. I sort through all the music and movies to find our Christmas favorites and have a hard time picking which one to watch/listen to first! I love plotting my course to get everything on my shopping list in the least amount of time necessary … but dread the mountainous task of wrapping. Love the holiday goodies and home-made salami. Hate the scattered sprinkles on the floor and the smoking grease aroma that never fails to permeate the house. Enjoy having company over … hate scrubbing toilets.

This week’s character trait will come in handy this season. Enthusiasm. Expressing joy in each task as I give it my best effort. A passionate interest or eagerness to do something. Absorbing or controlling possession of the mind by any interest or pursuit.

Honestly, I don’t think I could ever get that excited about dusting or toilets. But I could be eager to be done with the chore. (I’m kidding! Sorta.) Then again, I could use the time to pray for those who will be coming to our home or opening each gift I wrap. I could also give thanks for my many blessings or even combine the dreaded task with one of my favorites like blasting Christmas music throughout the house while I clean. I could focus on the end result (a clean house, piles of presents under the tree, goodies on a tray) and push ahead to get there.

Lots of ways to find enthusiasm even when it’s hard. But, the one that seems to help me the most is a reminder from Paul. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” (Colossians 3:23-24 NIV)

And I certainly wouldn’t want Jesus to have to deal with dust bunnies or grime.

What about you? How do you find enthusiasm for unpleasant tasks? Any tips for the rest of us?
