burglaralarmsI’ve noticed lately a rise in television commercials advertising home monitoring systems or identity theft protection. The company message seems to be: “use us and never worry again.”

Why does this message sell their product? Because we all crave this week’s character trait.

Security is structuring my life around that which cannot be destroyed or taken away. It’s the state of being free from danger or threat. It’s also being free from doubt, anxiety or fear resulting in confidence.

In the quest for security, the next logical question is to ask what cannot be destroyed or taken away. My job? Lots of people get fired or laid off every day. My health? Diseases or injuries can come at any time. My home, car, or other belongings? Fires, floods, landslides, earthquakes, and even random explosions at a fertilizer plant can wipe those out. My bank account or retirement savings? As we saw in 2008, an economic downturn and stock market crash can erase years of savings.

So if these things can all be taken away and aren’t a source of true security, what is? God and His Word. Eternal storehouses for treasure invested where thieves can’t steal it. (See previous post on The Treasure Principle.) Faith. Character development.

True security is investing my time, treasure, and talents where they matter most.

What about you? Do you have a home security system? What is your life structured around? How can you tell?

Character Matters – Security
