Small, plump, and gray-brown in color. Sparrows are one of the most familiar wild birds throughout the world. So common as to seem insignificant.

Even 2000 years ago, sparrows were not very important nor worth very much. As Jesus said, “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” (Matthew 10:29-31 NIV)

Worth more than sparrows? Even when I don’t feel like it? If a small bird falling doesn’t escape the notice of the Creator, how much more does He watch over those created in His own image? To think that the same God knows me so well that He even numbers the hairs on my head is amazing.

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20 NIV)

Creation declares that God cares for even the smallest of His creatures. If His eye is on the sparrow, He will also watch over you.

What about you? Do you ever feel insignificant or invisible in the crowd? Do you know how many hairs are on your head? Does that mean God knows more about you than you do?
