20130727-191807.jpgTwo weeks ago, I went up to Rocky Mountain National Park with family including several from out of state who were in town for my brother’s wedding. While there, we were on the lookout for many animals that call the mountains home, including mountain goats and bighorn sheep.

These creatures travel precarious terrain daily with confidence as their nimble feet skip over the rocks on their journey to and from water and lush meadows at lower elevations. But they were designed to live in high places and can find pathways along rugged mountainsides. Places with thin air, sparse vegetation, harsh weather, … and incredibly unobstructed views that take your breath away.

I’m reminded of a passage in the Bible that talks about another kind of animal in a different part of the world. “It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he enables me to stand on the heights … You broaden the path beneath me, so that my ankles do not turn.” (Psalm 18:32-33, 36 NIV) God calls us to ever higher places where we can see the bigger picture. And He gives us sure feet to scale the heights of faith with confidence in our footing.

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20 NIV)

Creation declares that God calls us to scale the heights of life with confidence.

What about you? Have you ever seen these mountain creatures in person? Could you live on the side of a cliff? What gives you the confidence to live in precarious places?
