A zebra and giraffeI enjoy visiting a zoo and seeing the wide variety of creatures that inhabit this planet. (It’s just the smells I could do without!)

In this continuing series about God’s fingerprints all over creation, I’m wrapping up the focus on animals with a virtual zoo. Pretend for a moment that you are strolling the walkways between exhibits while munching on a box of popcorn. Imagine the symphony of sounds as you examine creation’s innate diversity. Here are a few unique creatures with special talents to admire.

  • Camel — Can go up to ten months without water with feet made for walking on hot sand without sinking or getting burned.
  • Cheetah — Accelerates zero to 55 m.p.h. in two seconds, with top speeds of up to 70 m.p.h.
  • Chickens – Have superior vision and can perceive light long before humans (which is why they greet the dawn with a burst of song).
  • Hippopotamus – Sweat contains a sunscreen with additional healing properties. (How’s that for built-in protection?)
  • Beaver – Can cut through a tree almost as fast as an electric saw.
  • Giraffe – Gentle giant that is capable of decapitating a lion in self-defense using a single kick of its dinner-plate-sized hooves.
  • Turtle – Has a little magnetic crystal in its brain to sense the earth’s magnetic field and return to the very same beach to lay its own eggs (like a built-in GPS!)
  • Zebra – No two animals have identical stripes so they can recognize each other.
  • Bat – Uses echolocation (emitting high frequency sounds that rebound) and can detect objects as fine as a human hair in pitch darkness. Some can even hear an insect walking on a leaf!
  • Armadillo – Generous and hospitable with multiple-roomed large burrows they share with a whole collection of other animals including opossums, skunks, rabbits, snakes, rats, and burrowing owls.
  • Platypus – Parts duck, beaver, and otter in appearance, the males have poisonous stingers on their rear feet. Nothing quite captures the Creator’s imagination and sense of humor like this creature!

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20 NIV)

Creation declares God’s boundless creativity. With this much attention to variety and detail, how much more does He care about us?

What about you? What’s your favorite animal? Why? Which of the unique talents above would you like to have?
