After speaking into existence light, land, sky, the sun, moon, stars, plants, fish, birds, and countless varieties of animals, God turned His attention to a very special creation … mankind.
“Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’ So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:26, 27 NIV)
“Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7 NIV)
Not only was mankind handcrafted and life-breathed, God’s personal stamp went deeper. While the idea of being formed in His image may imply a human-like face and form, I believe it goes deeper toward the concept of imparted attributes. (Those qualities of God’s character that we share.)
We have the ability and desire to love and be loved because God is Love.
We have logic and reasoning because God is All-Knowing.
We have creativity and imagination because God is Creator.
We have strength because God is All-Powerful
We rule and lead because God is Soveriegn.
We have compassion and care for the weak because God is Good and first loved us.
We know the difference between right and wrong, good and evil, because God is Holy.
“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20 NIV)
Creation declares that God’s fingerprints are all over humanity.
What about you? What admirable qualities do you see in mankind? Where did they come from?
