still20watersThere are days (and weeks and even months) when the journey feels incredibly long and weariness saps our strength. In times like these, I desperately need a break and am reminded of King David’s words.

“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside still waters, he restores my soul.” (Psalm 23:1-3a)

Take a moment and soak in the imagery. Fields of lush green grass beside a sparkling lake reflecting the deep blue sky. A gentle breeze on your face as you lie down to rest, serenaded by the faint sound of chirping birds and the occasional buzzing bee. With each slowing breath, tensions drain away and peace infiltrates the crevices of your parched soul. Five minutes pass, then ten and you begin to doze with the sun’s warmth on your face.

I feel better already! My Shepherd knows exactly what I need, and right now I crave time beside the quiet waters. Like the words “Come To The River” by Rhett Walker Band, I will come to the river and lay myself down … then drink from the cup Jesus offers and thirst no more.

What about you? Have you ever been so weary that life feels overwhelming? When was the last time you rested beside the still waters (either figuratively or literally)?
