After a crazily-busy summer, it’s time for the kids to head back to school … and time for me to refocus on my goals. Not only is it a great time to regroup for a final push to accomplish my list for 2014, but the start of another school year feels like the perfect time for a fresh start.
With that in mind, I reviewed my personal mission statement — Faith, Family, and Fiction — then took a closer look at each area. Today, I’m refocusing on my faith.
In light of recent events in Gaza and Iraq, it is clear to me that the end is drawing near. Evil grows more evil and darkness more dark while the world’s media ignores atrocities (or reports them as allegations) and vilifies God’s chosen people defending the land He promised them. I’ve read the back of The Book and know it will get worse before it gets better. These events have not caught God by surprise.
Since we are seeing “worse” before our eyes, I believe even stronger that Jesus is coming soon. So, am I ready? Will I be found faithful? Am I watching and praying for His return? Will I finish strong and redeem the remaining time to reach the lost? And what does that look like?
In my life, I see my faith growing like a tree with deeper roots and wider branches. So, I’m dusting off a few challenging faith books in addition to my daily time in the Word. It’s time to steep myself in the Truth and spend more time in prayer. When the world shakes, I want my foundation to stand strong.
Then, while political changes and persecution highlight the approach of End Time events, I’m also reminded of Jesus’ words that the gospel would be preached to the ends of the earth and then the end would come (Matthew 24:14). I want to do my part in spreading the Good News to my neighbors, my community, and around the world. That means continuing to give financially to worthy organizations, pray for Christians and missionaries around the world, and do what I can to help tell the missions story of our local church using my writing skills.
What about you? Do you see the start of the school year as a new beginning? What are you focusing on this fall? How do you grow in faith?
