what ifEver started to do something big only to be plagued by doubts? Me, too!

As longtime blog followers know, I’m a writer with a dream to be published in fiction as well as my non-fiction devotionals, articles, and book encouraging parents with special-needs kids. My dream is to transport readers into a story that entertains, encourages, and gives a glimpse of God’s amazing love for us through the romance on the page.

In just over eight not-so-short months, my debut novel will be launching into the world thanks to a contract with Bling! Romance. While I’m still pinching myself some days that this dream is becoming a reality, there are more days than not when I wonder what I was thinking.

What if I can’t do this well? What if I can’t find enough endorsers and influencers and reviewers to help promote it? What if my email list only has ten subscribers? What if readers hate the characters? What if this book collects dust on the virtual shelves of Amazon? What if I have a book signing and only my mother shows up? What if I miss out on marketing opportunities because I was too scared to try? What if I can’t get another publishing contract?

Doubts are paralyzing, especially when we ignore the obvious fingerprints of God on the journey so far. On the good days, I remember those moments when God opened doors, cleared paths, and brought an editor to me instead of the other way around. On the bad days when I feel like I’m in over my head? I found the perfect theme song in Toby Mac’s recent release, Beyond Me. Check out these lyrics!

When I feel overwhelmed like I can’t do this crazy thing called writing, that’s when I find myself in the perfect position of depending on God. I can’t do this … on my own. So, when I remember how much I need God’s power and strength, I find the faith to trust that the One who brought me this far will carry, lead, and guide me the rest of the way.

Even when I’m facing the blank opening pages of a new story and doubting I have anything worthwhile to say.

What about you? When have you felt in over your head? Have doubts left you relying on God or quitting? Do you have a theme song for the tough days?

    Hi Candee.
    You can do it!
I LOVE this Toby Mac song.
I literally listen to it right before I start writing. It is my theme song too!!!
The words fit beautifully to what I think about my writing. The song, I believe, is written for writers who have doubts!
    Thanks for the post.
It is just what I needed today!
No worries…you are going to do just great.

Thanks, Gail! I’m glad I’m not alone in the struggle.
