With today’s resurgence of movies starring Marvel superheroes, it’s easy to think there’s a magic trick or missing ingredient needed in order to do something huge like move a mountain. Superman was born on a different planet where the “people” were different than here. Spiderman existed because an ordinary man got bit by a radioactive spider and radiation exposure also created The Hulk. Ironman had a special suit, Batman had a garage of cool gadgets, and Green Lantern had a power ring.
So, did Jesus announce a new breed of super-Christ-followers who could do whatever they wanted with mustard seed faith as their secret weapon? No. I believe that after the disciples were unable to heal a demon-possessed boy, Jesus rolled his eyes at their unbelief and perhaps used a little (sarcastic perhaps?) exaggeration to make a point.
It’s not the size of my faith that matters. It’s about the stability, strength, and Sovereignty of the object of my faith.
Imagine two ladders leaning against a house. One constructed of balsa wood rungs with signs of splitting. The other made of solid oak. Even with enormous faith and confidence and all the positive talking in the world, the first ladder will still let me down because it wasn’t designed to hold my weight. But, even if I approached the second ladder with tiny faith–perhaps faith as small as a mustard seed–and hesitantly put my shaking foot on the bottom rung, the oak would stand firm. And as I slowly discovered how sturdy and reliable and trustworthy the second ladder is, my doubts would fade away and I could scamper up the rest of the way.
How much faith do I need? Even if mustard seed faith is all I’ve got, God says, “I can work with that.”
What about you? Do you have a favorite superhero? How much faith do you have when facing a difficult situation? Is mustard seed faith enough?
