countryside-1149680_1280We’re almost to the end of the marathon of scholarship applications with my oldest son and I for one will be extremely glad to be done harping on, er, reminding him to finish the required essay questions. But one essay question had me searching my own heart for the answer: Which virtue is most important in your life right now? Charity, faithfulness, integrity, humility, joy, kindness, patience?

I asked him what he thought and his immediate answer was humility which was extremely timely considering his basketball team is currently undefeated and headed back to the state championship tournament where they lost the title game in overtime last year. He also recently won a prestigious award for being a well-rounded student athlete with community impact. So yes, I’m glad that humility topped his list.

But that still didn’t answer the question for me, so I started thinking about how each attribute is showing up in my life right now. Finding joy despite loads of stress. Kindness and patience despite a hormonal Princess on an autistic rant. Charity displayed through volunteering for a missions emphasis weekend at church even when I was really tired from a long weekend of basketball.

That left faithfulness which brought to mind steadfast pursuit of the things I’d committed to. Almost like putting one foot in front of the other as I head down the path, even if I can’t see what lies around the corner or over the horizon. And suddenly I knew what virtue is most important to me right now. My word for the year is “Focus” and I have five areas where I’ve made a commitment to progress. Faithfulness means that I’m daily (or sometimes weekly) doing something toward those goals. Rather than a last-minute marathon sprint, I’ve learned the power of faithfully chipping away at my massive word count goals or consistently adding to a savings account.

Slow and steady will win this race as faithfulness keeps my feet moving forward with my eye on the target.

What about you? What virtue is most important in your life right now? Is it different than a year, week, or even day ago?
